NEWTON — The Tri-State Actors Theater will present Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" at Sussex County Community College's (SCCC) Performing Arts Center from May 31 to June 17. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play pokes fun at such serious subjects as marriage, romance, and Victorian society and culture. Its high farce, witty dialogue, physical comedy and moments of comic, sentimental drama have helped make the play enduringly popular since its first staging at the St. James Theatre in London in 1895. Performances are Thursdays, May 31, June 7 and June 14, at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturdays, June 1-2, June 9-10, and June 15-16, at 8 p.m., and Sundays, June 3, 10 and 17, at 3 p.m. Tickets for Thursday evenings are $20, $18 for seniors (60+) and $15 for students. Ticket prices for Friday, Saturday and Sunday showings are $28, $25 for seniors and $20 for students. Group rates for 20 people or more are available for all performances and a SCCC student and staff discount is available for all performances except Thursdays. Advance reservations are always recommended. Tickets and information can be obtained by calling the Tri-State Actors Theater at 973-383-0510 or by visiting www.sussex.edu. SCCC is located at 1 College Hill Rd. in Newton.
