Trade and business skills courses offered at SCCC
SUSSEX COUNTY - Sussex County Community College’s Corporate and Community Education program is offering several business and computer classes to the public this fall. Learn to be productive with Microsoft Word This six-hour, one-day workshop will teach students everything needed to be productive and proficient with Microsoft Word. Learn how to create and edit a document, format paragraphs and pages, and create a document using both a template and letter wizard This course is being offered on Friday, Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. -4 p.m. Cost is $109 and includes handouts. Certificate program in modern office administration This 12-week, 240-hour certificate program teaches the skills one needs to obtain an administrative, clerical, or secretarial position. The course covers the following computer skills and relevant job searching and retention skills: keyboarding, computer basics and terminology, file management, word processing using Microsoft Word, spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel, internet and e-mail, database using Microsoft Access, and presentation skills using Microsoft PowerPoint. Students will also learn proper use of office equipment and receive other skills training including cover letter and résumé writing, telephone etiquette, time management, effective customer service, effective speaking, and interviewing skills. Fall classes begin Sept. 25 and run Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The cost of the course is $4,000. Unemployed individuals can take this class as a state-approved training course as part of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development program. First steps to starting a business With this class, students learn where to begin and what it takes to get a business off the ground. Topics covered include the basics on registering, developing and financing a business. In addition to a new business checklist, attendees will receive a copy of the US Small Business Administration Resource Guide for “Starting and Expanding Businesses.” Two sessions of this class are offered. Session I will take place from 9 a.m. - noon on Saturday, Sept. 9, in Room E-105. The instructor will be Vicki Lynne Morgan from Russmor Marketing. Session II will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6 in room E-105. The instructor for the evening class will be Karen Katcher from Katcher Associates LLC. Each session is $35. Business counseling is also available either through SCORE or the Skylands Small Business Development Center; call 973-300-2140 to make an appointment. Construction blueprint reading These classes are open to anyone with an interest in construction and are mandatory for those desiring construction licenses. Construction Blueprint Reading is being offered on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 12 - Oct. 31. Construction Specification & Contracts will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evenings Sept. 14 - Nov. 2.
