Gum disease is an infection of the tissues around your teeth (gums). It's caused by plaque buildup, a sticky film that continues to form around our teeth (from food + saliva).
Some symptoms are:
• easily bleeding gums
• swollen, tender gums
• Constant or persistent bad breath
• (Adult) Teeth becoming loose or separate
• Change in the way you bite down
• Change in the fit of your denture
Some factors that can increase the risk of developing gum disease are:
• Smoking
• Poor oral hygiene
• Crowded or crooked teeth that are hard to keep clean
• Diabetes
• Pregnancy
• Medications
The first stage of gum disease is called 'gingivitis', which is reversible. Be sure to talk to your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease!
