Red and White Out: Students remember Lexi and Chip

YOUTH. In a poignant, student driven, remembrance of two recently deceased students, fans conducted a "White Out" in honor of Lexi Faye and a "Red Out" in honor of Thomas McKenna at Sunday night's Lenape Valley Regional vs Newton High School football game.

    Usually high school football fan colors show opposition to one another, but at the Sunday night, Sept. 8, 2019 Lenape Valley Regional vs Newton High School white and red were worn by fans to show unity in the memory of two students who died this year. Lexi Faye, 17, of Newton, died in a May 11 car crash in Fredon on prom weekend. Thomas "Chip" McKenna, 18, of Byram, died on June 3 of kidney failure after kidney issues and struggle with an autoimmune disease.In honor of McKenna, Lenape Valley, and the Marines, Lenape students wore red. McKenna had started pre-training for the U.S. Marines boot camp. In honor of Faye, Newton high schoolers wore white. After her death, students had placed white ribbons around town, and raised funds for a fund to start girls lacrosse at the school.ok--Thomas McKenna's mother Nancy McKenna attended the game, wearing a Newton Strong T-shirt.Newton High School students organized a white out with many wearing white on Thursday - the first day of school - to honor Faye, who was a member of the Class of 2020.
