Vernon resident to chair Red Cross Heroes Campaign NEWTON — Howard Burrell has been appointed chairman of the local 2012 Heroes for the American Red Cross Campaign. A longtime resident of Vernon, Burrell is a former county freeholder and is a member of the Board of Trustees at Centenary College in Hackettstown. He has been an influential member of the board of directors of the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross since 2004. “I am honored to chair this grassroots campaign," said Burrell. "I particularly like the concept of working with people from all walks of life, from all income levels — businesses, schools, church, civic clubs and individuals — who agree to raise $1,000 for the Red Cross.” Burrell said the last year has been particularly tough for the Red Cross due to flooding from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Strom Lee. “The Red Cross in northern New Jersey assists some 300 families affected by house fires and other disasters each year," said Burrell. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free. While mandated by Congress to respond to disasters and to support military families in crisis, the Red Cross is not federally funded and is dependent on the financial support of people in local communities.
