Katherine Wallace wins Xi Beta Rho scholarship
Sparta Project Self-Sufficiency participant Katherine Wallace is the recipient of a Xi Beta Rho memorial scholarship in the name of former members Mary Buckley, Susan McAvinn and Beverly Zimmerman. Xi Beta Rho is a Sparta-based group of women whose purpose is service to the community, friendship among members, and the pursuit of social and cultural activities. Each year, the group raises funds for Project Self-Sufficiency, a Sussex County nonprofit organization devoted to helping single parents, teen parents, displaced homemakers and other low-income women achieve personal and economic self-sufficiency. Wallace, is being recognized for her perseverance, dedication and positive attitude toward her studies. Despite the challenges Wallace faces, including being a single parent, she continues to work hard and be a positive example to her fellow participants and her son. “The pursuit of a degree in not an easy one,” said Wallace, “especially in the midst of a full life of family obligations, maintaining a home and earning a living.” Says Program Coordinator Claire Willetts, “Year after year, the Xi Beta Rho Sorority has generously provided much-needed assistance to our participants. Our gratitude is endless.” For more information on the programs and support services offered by Project Self-Sufficiency, including counseling, case management, GED/ESL/ABE education, career training and placement, call 973-383-5129.This year, Xi Beta Rho members raised $600, primarily through a group garage sale held over the summer. Of this amount, $500 was designated for a scholarship to help a struggling local woman continue her education.
