John Matthew Henry of Wantage Township, N.J., passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 1, 2021. He was 89.

He was born in the Bronx on Feb. 23, 1932, and raised in Woodside, Queens,, N.Y. He lived there with his wife and family until 1968, when they moved to Stockholm, N.J.

John proudly served his country from 1951-1955 as a naval radio operator on the USS Midway, stationed in the Mediterranean Sea.

A hard-working photo engraver, he worked for Quality Engraving in Manhattan until his retirement.

A devoted Catholic, John was a longtime parishioner at St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church in Sussex, N.J. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus in Woodside, N.Y. An avid Rangers fan, John enjoyed watching and attending games at Madison Square Garden with his son and grandsons. As a young man he played roller hockey for the Long Island Ducks.

John is reunited with the love of his life, Lucille Blythe Henry, who predeceased him in 1992. In all of the years since their marriage in 1956, he referred to her as “My Bride.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Madeline,; his daughter Pamela; and his beloved wife, Lucille.

John is survived by his son, Donald of Wantage and Christine; daughter Carolyn (Henry) Howard of Vernon, N.J., and Glen; his grandchildren, whom he adored, Devin, Logan, Kayla (Howard) Young, and Taylor Howard; as well as his cherished great-grandchildren, Chloe and Caedyn Young.

Visitation was held July 6 at the Ferguson Funeral Home, Sussex. A private burial was held July 7 at North Hardyston Cemetery in Hardyston Township, N.J.
