NEWTON — Kerry Mulligan will be attending the 2012 National Association for Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) Celebration after having been named Sussex County Community College's (SCCC) Woman of the Year. The ceremony will be held on Jan. 22 at Seton Hall University and will recognize nominated female athletes from high schools, two-year colleges, and four-year institutions in New Jersey. At the ceremony one female will be chosen for the overall honors. The association has been around since 1899 and augments athletic opportunities for female students. They also host the National Girls and Women in Sports Day, this year on Feb. 1. 2012 is a notable year for NAGWS since it will mark the fortieth anniversary of Title IX, the ninth part of the Education Amendment of 1792, which bars discrimination in schools based on sex. Mulligan has been a crucial member of the women's soccer team at SCCC for the past two seasons, having played twenty-nine games where she scored four goals and provided eight assists for a total of sixteen points. In addition to performing on the field, Mulligan has excelled in the classroom. Her strong academic performance is highlighted by a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
