Andover - The Andover Twp. Police Dept. has given away two new BMX bicycles to kick off their “Summer 2006 Bicycle Helmet Safety Program.” During July and August, members of the department will patrol the neighborhoods looking for children riding their bicycles, skateboarding, and roller-skating. If a child is observed wearing a helmet, they will be given a coupon good for one ice cream cone donated by the Sparta Dairy Queen. If a child is observed riding without a helmet, they will be issued a warning and given information on the importance of wearing a helmet. The police department held a Bicycle Helmet Safety Poster Contest for the third-grade class at the Florence M. Burd School after receiving two BMX bicycles as a donation from Hinkley Auto Sales, located on Newton Sparta Road in Andover. Students participating in the poster contest were asked to use the new helmet law as their theme. The new law increases the age of mandatory helmet use from 13 to 16 years of age and includes bicycling, roller skating, and skateboarding.
