byram - From the first day of school some unusual creatures have been spotted in the second grade at Byram Lakes Elementary School. Students have enthusiastically been bringing in their "bag buddies." These characters are the result of an at-home summer reading project that was designed by a group of teachers to nourish and sustain the love of reading. Students were asked to keep a reading log and rate the books they read with a score of one to five stars. They were then required to choose their favorite character and make it into a puppet. The amazing results included puppets with fur, felt, buttons, beads and bottle caps. The students' enthusiasm was obvious, from the first bag buddy to the last. The children ended the summer not only with a new "buddy," but possibly a life-long love of reading as well.
