Bear attack reported
NEWTON-At 10:09 a.m. on July 17, Newton Police were called to the Newton Golf Driving Range on Woodside Avenue for a report of a black bear that had attacked an employee of the driving range. According to police reports, Sean Oroho was collecting golf balls on the driving range in a motorized golf ball picker when he saw two bear cubs near the woods. Oroho immediately realized his position put him between the cubs and their mother. As Oroho tried to retreat, the picker's tire became stuck in the turf. The mother bear charged at Oroho and repeatedly struck the picker's protective cage damaging it. Eventually Oroho was able to free the machine and retreated. The bears then left the area. Police searched the area but could not locate the bears. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife was notified of the incident.
