    Students nominated for Sussex County Scholar-Athlete of the Year Elizabeth So - Pope John XXIII High School So is a senior and ranked third with a GPA of 4.52. She was named to the Distinguished Honor Roll for the past four years and received a National Merit Letter of Commendation and the Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Award. She is also an AP Scholar. So participates in cross country and track and has four varsity letters in each. In cross country she was awarded the Coaches Award and the Pope John Spirit Award. She also is a member of indoor and outdoor county relay teams. She has medalled in the 160m and 3200m at the SCIL Festival since freshman year. So is a member of the Key Club, Math League, Operation smile and the Girl Scouts. Timothy Hennessey - Kittatinny Regional High School Hennessey is a senior and is ranked sixth with a GPA of 4.45. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was named an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar. Hennessey has earned seven Kittatinny varsity letters in swimming, tennis and soccer. He swims the backstroke and 200 individual medley and is captain of the team. As a tennis player he earned the third singles spot and played with his team in the state tournament. He is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Technology Student Association. He has participated in the Peer Leadership Program at Kittatinny for three years, which involves community service and team-building activities. Kelly Garrigan - Sussex County Technical School Garrigan is a senior and is ranked second, with a GPA of 3.71. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and was named to “Who’s Who among American High School Students.” She is also a Bloustein Scholar for New Jersey. Garrigan has been on the varsity tennis team for three years and was named captain this year. She is also on the varsity basketball and softball teams. She was the Sussex State Bank Athlete of the Month for girls’ tennis in November and is the president of the Varsity Club. She is a Senior Girl Scout, and a member of Peer Leader and REBEL. Kendrick Murphy - Vernon Township High School Murphy is a senior and is ranked 12th with an average of 95.12. He is a member of the National Honor Society, of which he is vice president, and the World Language Society. He is on the varsity basketball and volleyball teams. He is captain of both. Last year he led the basketball team in scoring, was awarded All-SCIL Honorable Mention and was named to the All-Tournament team. In volleyball he led the team in blocks and was named to the second team All-League. He is a member of PEER Leader. He is a leader in his church’s youth group and was a teen facilitator at a summit on violence education for the past three years. He also volunteers at Harvest House. Alex Rubino - Sparta High School Alex Rubino is a senior and is ranked second with a GPA of 4.53. He has earned three Gold Achievement Medals at the State Russian Olympiad and received the Outstanding Student of Latin Award and the Outstanding Student of Russian Award. He placed first in Aquatics and was a member of the team that placed third overall at the New Jersey State Envirothon. He will have earned ten varsity letters by graduation, in football, skiing, and track and field. He played on the 2003 State Championship Team in football and was a co-captain of the 2005. He was voted most valuable skier for two years. He is an Honor Society tutor and a member of an ecology club. Joshua Hoff - Wallkill Valley Regional High School Hoff is a senior and is ranked first with a GPA of 4.48. He has maintained straight A’s in all of his classes throughout his high school career. He is on the varsity soccer, track and tennis teams. He is a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Peer Development Program, the Academic Bowl, the Science League, the Math League and the Science Olympiad. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Kindness and Justice, Big Brother/Big Sister and his church group. Katherine Walton - High Point Regional High School Katherine Walton is a senior and ranked fourth with a GPA of 4.37. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Foreign Language National Honor Society and the National Honor Roll. She was named to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” She has run varsity cross country for three years, and has received both the Coach’s Award and the Most Improved Award. This year she is captain and ran in the State Group Championships. Outside of school she is a teen mentor for the Strengthening Families program and has been a member of the American Red Cross Youth Council where she volunteers. Manuel Fanarjian - Jefferson Township High School Fanarjian is a senior and is ranked sixth, with a GPA of 4.98. She is currently taking four AP classes and two honors classes. He is president of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society. Fanarjian plays varsity football, basketball and baseball and is a captain in all three. In his senior year he was voted the most valuable player in football for playing quarterback, receiver, safety, offensive lineman and kicker. As part of the National Honor Society he has tutored younger students in math and French. He is a member of the Peer Development Program and belongs to Teens Against Tobacco Use. Allison Schubert - Lenape Valley Regional High School Schubert is a senior and is ranked ninth, with a GPA of 3.98. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Peer-2-Peer and the International Friendship Circle, where she is secretary. She was named to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students,” is a Bloustein Distinguished Scholar, holds physics records at her school and is recognized by the National Honor Roll. A three-year varsity starter and co-captain of the field hockey team, she was named to the first team All-SCIL and second team All-Area, and voted most valuable offensive player for her team. She is a member of Girl Scout Volunteer Interest Patrol. She holds the Senior Girl Scout Leadership and Challenge Awards. Cynthia LaRosa - Hopatcong High School Cynthia LaRosa is a senior and is ranked second in a class of 226. She has a grade point average of 4.71 and has achieved high honor roll for every marking period since her freshman year. She has been awarded the Rochester (Kodak) Young Leaders Award and the Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar Award. Captain of her soccer team her junior and senior years, she was named the most valuable player for the past three years. La Rosa has also been a member of the varsity track team for the past three years for which she was names the most valuable player her junior year. La Rosa is also a member of the National Honor Society, a Bring It Mentor volunteer and participated in I World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. Kassandra Flamouropoulos - Newton High School Flamouropoulos is a senior and is ranked seventh, with a GPA of 4.26. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is the principal flutist in the school band. For the last two years, she played with the All-County Band and All-Area Wind Ensemble. Last summer she performed with the Sussex County Youth Orchestra as principal flutist at various venues in France and Switzerland. In soccer she competed in the state semifinals and Region One League with the New Jersey Rangers. She is a four-letter varsity soccer player and was named co-captain this fall. She also made the All-League team. She tutors and volunteers, and she has earned the Girl Scout Silver Award.
