    May 28 Byram Police Officer DeWald responded to a report that a vehicle had run off the road damaging the lawn and landscaping of a private residence. The driver fled in the vehicle before the patrol arrived but the homeowner provided the vehicle's license plate number and other information. A computer check revealed the vehicle was registered to an address in Sparta. Sparta Police went to the residence and spoke with Jonathan Spiro, 24, who told them he had been driving and had run off the road in Byram. Spiro was arrested by the Sparta Police for an outstanding traffic warrant. In addition, he was charged with careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, driving while suspended, refusing to submit breath samples and driving while intoxicated in Byram Township. Sparta Police maintained custody of Spiro. May 30 A Byram Police officer observed Manuel Jimenez, 27, of Allentown, Penn., operating a vehicle recklessly on Route 206. According to police, Jimenez failed to stop when the officer activated his overhead lights and siren. Jimenez continued south on Route 206 for approximately half a mile crossing into the opposite lane on numerous occasions until he finally pulled over. After a brief roadside investigation and field sobriety tests, Jimenez was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. He was transported to police headquarters where he was given two breath tests which he failed. Jimenez was processed and released to the custody of a friend pending a municipal court appearance later this month. Jimenez was issued motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving, failing to wear his seatbelt, being an unlicensed driver, failing to yield to police and driving while intoxicated. His vehicle was impounded for 12 hours as required by state law. Six hours later, at approximately 9 a.m. Jimenez drove back to the police station in a second vehicle to attempt to recover his impounded vehicle from the earlier arrest. A Byram police officer spoke with Jimenez after observing him pull into the police station parking lot and detected a strong odor of alcohol on Jimenez. Field sobriety tests were again conducted and Jimenez was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Jimenez was given two breath tests which he failed. He was again processed and released to a friend pending a municipal court appearance. His second vehicle was impounded for 12 hours as required by state law. Jimenez was issued summonses for being an unlicensed driver, operating an unregistered vehicle, failing to wear his seatbelt and driving while intoxicated. Another subject, Manuel Vacacela, 36, of Hackettstown, was charged with allowing an intoxicated person to operate a motor vehicle. Vacacela had signed for and taken custody of Jimenez from his first driving while intoxicated arrest of the day.
