Byram Police
November 5 At 1:52 a.m., a Byram Township patrol observed a vehicle with no inspection sticker parked on South Shore Road in a way that it was obstructing the passage of other vehicles. After a brief investigation, the driver, Douglas S. Wright, 21, of Newton, was asked to perform several field sobriety tests, which he failed. Wright was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated, and transported to police headquarters where he failed two breath tests. Wright was released to a friend pending a Byram municipal court date. Wright was charged with DWI, possession of open alcoholic beverage containers in a motor vehicle, obstructing the passage of vehicles and failure to display an inspection sticker. Wright’s vehicle was impounded for 12 hours as required by law. At 3:20 a.m., a Byram patrol traveling on Route 206 observed a vehicle traveling in the opposite directions failing to dim its high beams. The officer stopped the vehicle and after a brief investigation, the driver, Justin M. Gates, 20, of Hopatcong was arrested for driving while intoxicated. The passenger, Korey J. Ball, 20, of Flanders, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were transported back to police headquarters for processing. Gates was given and failed a drug recognition exam. Gates and Ball were then released to a friend pending a Byram municipal court date. Gates was charged with D.W.I., being under the influence of a controlled and dangerous substance and failure to dim high beams. Ball was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The vehicle was impounded for 12 hours as required by State law. November 7 At 2:50 a.m., Byram Township patrols received a call about a possible intoxicated driver in the parking lot of Quick Chek. When patrols arrived, they spoke to Richard M. Comparato, 34, of Sparta, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2002 Hyundai in the parking lot. After a brief investigation, patrols administered field sobriety tests to Comparato, which he failed. Comparato was then arrested for driving while intoxicated, and transported to police headquarters where he refused to submit to breath tests and was charged with D.W.I. and refusal to submit to breath tests. He was released to a family member pending a Byram municipal court date. His vehicle was impounded for 12 hours as required by state law.
