Stanhope — The Byram Intermediate School students, in conjunction with the Peer Leadership Group, raised more than $2,200 for the Fritzky family, by hosting the annual basketball games between the Byram girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and the respective teachers’ team. On Feb. 2 the girls’ team, coached by Mrs. Muenzen’s replacements — Charlie Best and Corey Gallagher — got revenge for last year’s loss and beat the Byram faculty, coached by Patty Trentanelli, by a score of 38 - 28. The girls dominated the first quarter with a devastating 20 to 1 run on the teachers. Even though Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Manser each contributed 8 points, the Rams answered back to seal the victory. Devony Di Mattia led the girls with 14 points, while Kelsey Rafferty knocked in 10 and Lindsey Sabo added 8. Alex Koreivo, Megan Price and Brittany Martini also tipped in a bucket for the win. On Feb. 9 the Byram boys’ team was able to pull out a victory in the final seconds to beat the teachers 49-48. The Rams jumped out quickly and took a 5-point half-time lead. The tables were turned in the third quarter as the teachers took an 11-point lead. Brian Kreuder was fouled as he hit a phenomenal 3-pointer with 9 seconds on the clock to tie the game. His foul shot found the net and the Rams sealed the victory. Brian Kreuder led the scoring with 19 points, while Billy Sabo netted 18 and A.J. Sosa added 6. Eric Oswin also contributed 4 points and Chris Hosler chipped in 2. On the teachers’ team, Mr. McCorkle and Mr. Gallagher netted 12 points each to lead the teachers in scoring. Mr. Cady had 9 points while Mr. Clayton scored 8 points including a whopper 3-pointer from “down-town.” Mr. Leonard, Mr. McCracken, Mr. Cooke and Mr. Kulesa rounded out the scoring for the faculty. Although both of the students’ teams won, the faculty vows to come back and win next year. The Byram School family is proud to have organized and participated in this project to assist the Fritzky family.
