BYRAM - In the spring, Byram Intermediate School fifth graders began collecting school supplies as part of Project Afghanistan. Donations were brought in by students in grades fifth through eighth. This program was created for the children’s D.A.R.E. officer, Lt. Peter Zabita, who was sent to Afghanistan in March with the National Guard. When he arrived, Lt. Zabita was moved by the terrible conditions of the schools in the area of Gardez. His deep concern for children prompted him to make the request for school supplies. The classes collected a total of 25 boxes, which were sent to Zabita in late May. The local PBA handled mailing the school supplies overseas. Zabita then selected schools and began to distribute the supplies. The teachers and students were excited to receive these donations of art supplies, books, pencils, pens, notebooks, dictionaries, and other items. Lt. Zabita has sent numerous photos and letters to help the fifth graders and their teachers understand the conditions of life in Afghanistan. The children are looking forward to February when Officer Zabita will return and share his experiences in person. The intermediate school children should be proud of themselves for making a difference in the lives of their peers in Afghanistan.
