Three students at the Merriam Avenue Elementary School in Newton have helped to raise funds for the American Red Cross in an effort to help those displaced by civil war in Sudan, Africa. More than 180,000 people have been forced to leave their homes, either by authorities or because of the massive rainfall that has washed away many homes and roads. The United Nations has stated that many of the displaced are women and children. Here, Patricia Day, executive director of the Sussex County chapter, accepts a check from Kiara Detwiller, Ashley Illiff and Emily Lawrence on behalf of their classmates at Merriam Avenue School.
