County joins in statewide sweep of deadbeat dads and moms
Newton - The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office took part in the Statewide Non-Support Warrant Sweep, sponsored by the Sheriffs Association of N.J., through Dec. 2, reported County Sheriff Robert E. Untig. Early Nov. 30, sheriff’s officers, armed with arrest warrants issued by the Superior Court of N.J., arrested 15 individuals who had failed to comply with court-ordered child support payments. (See accompanying list.) In addition, five others surrendered themselves to the sheriff’s office. All persons arrested in the sweep were processed and lodged in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility. Those incarcerated could make payment of the monies owed in order to be released. If unable to make full payment, they were scheduled for a court appearance before a Superior Court judge. At that time the judge will make a determination regarding the amount of child support that must be paid on a case-by-case basis. Sheriff Untig requested that any member of the public who can provide information that may lead to the arrest of someone who owes child support, contact the Sussex County Sheriffs Office Crime Stoppers toll-free tip line at 888-973-CRIME. Such information can greatly assist in enforcing outstanding warrants. Calls can be made 24 hours per day and are always confidential. If the information leads to an arrest, the informant may be eligible for a cash reward. Persons who owe child support and believe they are subject to arrest are urged to turn themselves in to the Sheriffs Office at 39 High St., Newton, or call 973-579-0888.
