Byram -- Charles Chittenden, 57, was killed Friday when the Cranberry Lake house he lived in was engulfed in flames. The Byram Township Fire Department responded to the call at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. But by the time they arrived, there was almost nothing they could do, according to Fire Chief Meg Sesselberg. "The house was already engulfed in flames," said Sesselberg. "All we could do was contain the fire and make sure it did not spread." Several other municipalities were called to assist, including Andover Borough and Township, Greene Borough, Netcong and Hoptacong. Although Byram does have one tanker truck, it was not enough. "There are no fire hydrants in the area," Sesselberg said. "Water has to be pumped from area lakes so we needed the extra tankers to keep the flow of water going." The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
