Cub Scout Pack 276 members recognized for their efforts against hunger

BYRAM-They weren't just a bunch of kids selling brownies, they were enthused, dedicated young boys from Byram Cub Scout Pack 276 helping to take a bite out of childhood hunger by promoting and conducting a "Cubs Against Hunger" bake sale that raised more than $500 to help feed children in need. Impressed by the boys' initiative, the Byram Township Council honored the members of Pack 276 during its recent meeting. Mayor Skip Danielson publicly commended the boys for their efforts and success in raising awareness of this nationwide problem. The Scouts' recent sale was held as part of the nation's Second Annual Great American Bake Sale, sponsored by Parade Magazine and Share Our Strength, a nonprofit anti-hunger organization. All proceeds raised by Pack 276 went directly to grants to support after-school and summer meal programs, nutrition education, and advocacy efforts to help the more than 13 million hungry American children. Jacob Quasius, an 8-year-old Bear Cub Scout from Pack 276, spearheaded the Scouts' efforts: After reading about the Great American Bake Sale in the magazine, he presented the idea for a "Cubs Against Hunger" bake sale to Pack 276 leaders. He also wrote letters soliciting donations from area businesses as well as politicians, including all Sussex County freeholders, state assemblymen and congressmen, both senators, Governor James McGreevy, and even President George W. Bush. Area businesses also responded to Quasius' written requests by contributing to the Pack 276's efforts. Among the business that mobilized for the event were: Bagel and Bake in Stanhope, Byram Dairy Queen, Byram Dry Cleaners, Cranberry Deli, Dunkin Donuts, Hollywood Video Party Planet, ShopRite of Byram, and Staples of Ledgewood.
