DEP has money for tank removal
Byram Township manager Greg Poff announced Monday the state Department of Environmental Protection has reinstated grant and loan program for homeowners who need to remove underground storage tanks on their property. Homeowners must have underground fuel storage tanks removed before they sell their home. Fuel oil storage must be in an above-ground tank, either in a basement or outside on a stand or legs so the tank itself does not touch the ground. Many buried tanks are old and could leak. Poff said the loan and grant program is for both leaking and non-leaking tanks. When a tank leaks, the homeowner must pay to have the soil around the tank tested and any contaminated soil removed and disposed of properly.
