Engineering goal set for Kittatinny student

An experiment with chocolate asphalt could pave the way towards Kittatinny Regional High School sophomore Sarah Bates’ future career in engineering. Bates attended a one-day symposium, sponsored by Widener University and the Society of Women Engineers, for females interested in the male-dominated field. During the conference, Bates learned the road to engineering is not always easy. She noted a recent Widener graduate told participants she finished high school at the top of her class, only to fail math in her first semester at Widener. The woman ultimately prevailed. “She was able to tell us that times will be rough, but that we can do it,” Bates noted. She participated in four activities during her day-long venture: water treatment, building Lego cars, bridge design and chocolate asphalt. “I am so glad I has the opportunity to go. The event has opened my eyes and helped me to understand the engineering field a lot more,” Bates commented. Chemistry teacher Lisa Chammings was not surprised by Bates’ enthusiasm. “She’s a wonderful student,” Chammings said.
