Stillwater - Horse crazy girls and boys have a chance to experience riding and equine care at Fairview Lake YMCA’s one and two week specialty riding programs throughout the summer, called Ranch Camp. Ranch Camp is one of Fairview Lake YMCA’s most popular specialty sleepaway camps, in which campers get to experience first-hand the joys and responsibilities that go along with riding and owning a horse. According to Ellie Daingerfield, Executive Director of Fairview Lake YMCA, “This program is great for riders of every skill level. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of proper riding technique, while experienced riders will refine their skills in a fun, nurturing environment.” Each camper is assigned a horse and is taught to be responsible for its care, including grooming, caring for the tack, doing stable chores and building a loving relationship with the horse. Campers will then saddle up for riding instruction and non-aggressive training with an emphasis on speed control and steering using proper cues. The one-week program is finished off with a Gymkhana finale that each camper will participate in. The two week program includes many of the same lessons as the one week program, with more emphasis placed on advancing riding skills and acquiring in-depth knowledge about horses. Campers will learn to recognize common diseases, read vital signs and administer basic first aid. There will be lots of fun activities, including a day long trail ride and time for using the camp’s countless recreation facilities and beautiful lake. Fairview Lake YMCA also offers specialty camps which focus on sailing, windsurfing, fine arts and more, in addition to their traditional summer camps and adventure based programs called Environmental Trips for Challenge. An open house is set for April 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information or for directions call 1-800-686-1166, or visit their website at www.fairviewlakeymca.org.
