Sparta - New Image Body Center, a Sparta-based exercise and Pilates studio, is offering free classes to help new mothers feel good, get back into shape, and regain their self-esteem after having a baby. “It is essential for new moms to be physically, mentally and spiritually healthy in order to take care of their new precious baby, as well as taking care of their home, other children, husbands and careers,” said Alexis Boyle, one of the center’s owners. According to Caring Medical and Rehab Services, new moms automatically want to start dieting, however, it is imperative that they do not diet, especially for moms who nurse, explained Boyle. “Both the mom and baby require every bit of nutrition to stay healthy.” Boyle said Pilates is an “ideal form of exercise for new moms to regain their pre-pregnancy body shape due to its emphasis on core strength, an area which seems to take the most abuse during and after pregnancy.” The Pilates Reformer, a cable-based machine on which Pilates exercises are performed allows participants to strengthen and lengthen muscles in a gentle and calming way, while burning a great amount of calories. “It is stressful to leave the baby, find a baby-sitter, and hurry home when he/she is so little in order to fit exercise into her day, added Vicki Vara, co-owner of the center. To offer congratulations to new moms, and to reinforce the importance of exercise, the center is offering free 45-minute Reformer Pilates classes at 1 p.m. from Monday, May 15, through Friday, May 19. New moms are invited to bring their little ones (ages eight months and younger) in a car seat or rocker and to place them nearby while exercising. Classes are held in a dimly lit room, with soft music and candles, to create a calming, soothing atmosphere for both the moms and baby. Class size is limited to five participants.
