Green Girl Scouts celebrate role of women in United States

Green - Girl Scouts from Green participated in a service unit event called “Ms. President, Ms. President,” a program developed by the Girl Scouts of the USA and the White House Project, an organization dedicated to changing the way people think about women in leadership roles. The program was created to provide an opportunity for girls to experience and celebrate women who have paved the way in social and political reform, as well as highlight women who have made significant contributions to the world and who serve as inspiration to young girls and women throughout the world. The evening included a “Wheel-of-Fortune” style game that highlighted women in various fields and their contributions to American society, an obstacle course and information on women’s participation in in sports through Title Nine. Other highlights included a “Helen Keller station,” where girls punched out their names in Braille, an American flag pin created from beads, a biography of “Amazing Grace” Hooper, a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy who is also known as the “mother of computer science” and one of the few women who has a Navy destroyer named in her honor. A banner gave girls a place to write why they are proud to be American girls. The evening also hosted Marie Bilik, the former mayor of Green, who spoke about her life in politics and answered all of their questions as to what it was like to be a mayor. Bilik said her favorite duty was marrying people. She presented the girls with a blank key, symbolizing the key to their futures. At the end of her speech, Bilik swore in each Girl Scout with the presidential oath of office, symbolically making each girl “President of the United States.” The Girl Scouts of Green came away from this evening with the knowledge that they control their own futures and their path can be as exciting as they wish to make it. Their destination is only limited by their dreams.
