Greenes go a-cupping in search of fine coffee

Sparta - Dave and Brian Greene don’t buy just any coffee for their Greene’s Beans Coffee Shops in Hackettstown and Sparta. They research the top coffees available and sometimes have an opportunity to bid directly on the ones they know are the best. Such was the case recently, when they were invited to a special “cupping” at the offices of importer Royal Coffee New York, where 25 of the finest coffees of Guatemala were made available for tasting. A group of professional cuppers had been invited earlier by Anacafe (the Guatemala Coffee Association) to select the annual “Cup of Excellence” winners. Royal then made all of them available to its customers through the special auction. “We were happy to participate in this particular cupping,” said Brian Greene. “Guatemala has seven distinctive coffee producing regions, each exporting some of the finest coffee in the world.” The Greene brothers chose two coffees to bid on, “Finca el Consuelo” and “Finca la Primavera,” which are now available at the two Greene’s Beans Café shops. Dave Greene disclaims any special expertise: “We’re just a couple of local guys doing our best to buy and roast the best coffee we can get for the best customers in the world,” he said. “These are two very special coffees. We invite everyone to come in and try them.” The cafe also features a broad assortment of select loose teas and tea beverages. The Greenes also offer an assortment of pies and cakes, biscotti, bagels, scones, cookies and other pastries.
