Guest chef carves another niche for SCCC students
Newton Sussex County Community College recently hosted an ice carving demonstration on its campus to raise awareness of the budding Hotel and Restaurant Management program and the launch of a new extracurricular club of the same name. While the degree program is intended to place students directly into the labor force, the club seeks to minimize this transition by exploring the many facets of the industry with the aid of local businesses, talented professionals and other student members. One such profeesional, Chef Chad Gasiorek, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., transformed a block of ice into the logo of the College, affixing the number “25” engraved of ice on top of the sculpture, representing the 25th anniversary of the College. Students, faculty and staff who stumbled upon the ice carving event weathered the cold and observed the artist completing the piece in under an hour, stopping at times to answer the crowd’s questions. Chef Gasiorek is currently a baking instructor at the Sussex County Technical School and is a member of Sussex County Community College’s Hospitality Advisory Board. The hotel and restaurant management program and new hospitality club at SCCC is coordinated by Professor Lisa Kraus-Utter, who has served in many different capacities, most recently as a culinary arts instructor at the Sussex County Technical School.
