Newton - Two Kittatinny students were recognized by the Hampton Rotary for demonstrating outstanding community service. Meghan Harp received the honor in April and Brett Clawson was honored in March. Harp is the daughter of Maureen Tsadilas of Stillwater. She has a long history of volunteerism, including working for the teen program at the YMCA, teaching children to lead healthy, happy lives, or serving refreshments for victims of domestic abuse. As a high-school freshman, she mentored a program at Big Brothers/Big Sisters once a week for children with special needs. She has collected financial donations for many causes, including the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and she has helped collect non-financial donations, such as toys for children, handwritten letters for soldiers in the armed forces, bottled water for “911” victims, and warm blankets for the homeless in NYC. A member of the National Honor Society, Harp serves as vice president of the student council executive board. She works on various committees at Kittatinny and writes for the student newspaper. She has participated in peer leadership, K3D (a cooperative project project between Kittatinny students and disabled adults), Interact club and cross-age training. In sports, Harp played field hockey for two years at Kittatinny and has been a member of the varsity swim team for four years. Certified as an American Red Cross lifeguard, she has been on duty at the Kittatinny pool during the school year and at Swartswood State Park during the summer months. Clawson is the son of Bradley and Elizabeth Clawson of Sandyston. He has participated in peer leadership and the annual K3D event. He was chosen to represent Kittatinny at TIGS, a state-wide non-profit organization that promotes anti-drug and anti-alcohol lifestyles. This summer, he will be joining a group of students to build houses in Virginia as part of a Habitat for Humanity project. As a peer leader, Clawson has participated in many fundraising activities, such as car washes, lip syncs, the Easter egg hunt, Christmas caroling, and the senior citizen outreach program, where he does chores that senior citizens cannot handle. He serves on the peer leadership steering committee, the student group that plans activities for the year. He is also a Madrigal singer and has performed in many Kittatinny musical programs, including Guys and Dolls, Brigadoon, and Oklahoma. He is currently auditioning for South Pacific, which will take place this spring.
