Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice nurse honored

Newton Sue Pittigher, a Licensed Practical Nurse at Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, was selected by the New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Organization as New Jersey’s Hospice LPN of the year. Pittigher was honored at the 9th Annual NJHPCO Awards Dinner, earlier this month at the Sheraton Hotel, Eatontown. Don Pendley, president of the NJHPCO, recognized Pittigher’s professionalism, dedication and compassion as a hospice nurse. In honoring Pittigher, Pendley noted that she exemplified the very best in caring, professional services, gaining a great understanding of her patients’ pain and fears, but also understanding she can help them experience comfort and joy. Hospice Governing Board Chair Julia Quinlan and Executive Director Cecelia Clayton attended the presentation, as did many of Pittigher’s colleagues and family members. Pittigher joined the hospice team in June 2004, and immediately began to inspire all around her with her devotion to her patients, and with her determination to define the meaning of the term “quality of life.” Constantly learning new ways to serve, she incorporates pet therapy in her patient care, with heartwarming and comforting results. Pittigher joins a statewide team of hospice award-winning professionals who are chosen because they exemplify the spirit of hospice, gently and cheerfully caring for terminally ill patients, extending compassion and dignity, never ceasing to reach out to help. “Each moment is important,” is Pittigher’s message to patients, families and colleagues every day as she sets out to offer care and service. The staff and board of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice congratulate Sue Pittigher for winning this award, and for displaying a dedication that has made a difference in the lives of patients throughout the community.
