Lake Mohawk Golf Club blends present with refined tastes of old

Sparta - Nestled in the Lake Mohawk reservation is the Lake Mohawk Golf Club, a 76-year-old private club with an 18-hole championship golf course and clubhouse. The club was established in the mid 1920s during the time the lake and roads were being built. Lake Mohawk was to be an upscale community and the golf course would provide added attraction to the lakeside community. The appeal of the course has transcended the reservation’s boundaries. The N.J. Professional Golfers Association recently played a tournament at the club and rated it one of the top courses in the state. But golf is only a part of the overall experience. For club members, the socializing, the food and the ambiance are welcomed added bonuses to the game. “The members and guests consistently rave about the food and service provided at the club,” said Dave Johnson, club president. “Chef Hector MacDonald brings a unique talent to food preparation that appeals to a wide variety of taste buds.” Refined tastes According to Johnson, in today’s casual age, the Lake Mohawk Golf Club has become something of an anachronism of the refined tastes of yesteryear. One example is in the use of names. Upon entering the club, members are greeted by the titles of “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” or “Dr.” “Like a fireplace on a cold winter night, it is not really necessary but it certainly makes life more pleasant,” said Johnson. The club upholds and employs old-fashioned etiquette that has faded from society elsewhere. However, its taste for the things of time-gone-by, does not mean the club is outdated. In 2004 the bunkers on the golf course were restored with ponds and a new sprinkler system. A comprehensive capital improvement program was approved to expand the dining room’s grill area, build a new pro-shop with cart barn garage, erect a new maintenance building, expand the practice range and convert the existing shop into a halfway house, as well as to build a snack shack between the ninth and 18th hole. Golf uninterrupted Improvements to the interior of the clubhouse will take place during the winter months. The projects are scheduled to be completed by the fall, and there will be no interruption to the golf course during this renovation. “Although this coming year will present unique challenges for the club as we proceed with the capital project, we are excited about the improvements we will all soon enjoy for many years to come,” said Johnson. “We truly appreciate the support and confidence of the membership and the community.” For information, or to request a membership application, visit online at lakemohawkgolfclub.com or call 973-729-9200.
