Latin alive and well at Pope John HS

sparta - Latin, the ancient classical Indo-European core language, is thriving in the modern setting of Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta. Recently, 70 Latin I and Latin II students from the school joined thousands of young people worldwide to compete in the 2006 National Latin Exam, co-sponsored by the American and Junior Classical Leagues. Pope John students won four summa cum laude gold medals, nine silver maxima cum laude medals, 13 magna cum laude, and nine cum laude certificates. Latin I gold medalists were Megan Lang and Thomas Potter. Silver medalists were Richard Gangloff, Ioni Kokodis, Helen Uczkowski, Christopher Gaus, Bradley Holenstein, Andrew Born and Christopher Ritchie. Magna cum laude certificates in Latin I were awarded to Brandon Adams, Preston McBride, Meghan Farrell, Anthony Green, Maria Ambrosino, Courtney Scairpon, David Seabold and Michelle Handy. Cum laude certificates went to Lane Lambert, Elyse Hitscherich, Kimberly Brinkerhoff, James Kasica, Joshua Brinkerhoff, Jason Frandi and Adam Wechsler. Latin II gold medalists were Thomas Wilson and Benjamin Dudley. Silver medalists were Nadine Williams and Anthony Higgins. Magna cum laude certificates were awarded to Todd Ryan, Leo Bond, Marley Mitchell, Radha Desai and Michael Falduto. Cum laude certificates went to Anne Lockwood and Melissa Bird. Jane Harrigan is the teacher of the Latin I class at Pope John; Wendy Morris teaches Latin II.
