NEWTON-A introductory course in calligraphy, the art of writing, will be presented 7-9 p.m., Mondays, Feb 21 through April 18, at Sussex County Community College. Fee is $199 and an additional $25 per student will be collected on the first night of class for materials. Kathy Milici, a professional calligrapher for more than 25 years and owner of 24 Karat Designs Calligraphy Studio in Newton, will teach the eight-week course. She is also a member of the Society of Scribes in New York City and has been trained by White House calligraphers. With an emphasis on letter forms, students will undertake an eye-to-hand study of the classic Chancery Cursive alphabet, which is similar to italic. Elements of form, spacing, lower and uppercase letters, ligatures, numerals, punctuation and layout will be taught in detail. Calligraphy can be used to add stylish flair to invitations, envelopes, menus, scrapbooks and poetry, and for gifts, as well as, personal use. "Calligraphy in the Celtic Style," 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, April 16, will explore the foundation, structure, and distinctive hand of the Celtic alphabet in a one-day workshop taught by Milici. The course is $74 and an additional $25 per student will be collected by the instructor for materials. For information, call 300-2140 or 300-2143; or visit www.sussex.edu/cce/.
