Sussex County — Several members of The MOMS Club of Hampton, Frankford and Lafayette, along with their children, spent the afternoon of Dec. 20 visiting with residents of Bristol Glen in Newton. In addition to bringing smiles, hugs and warm wishes for the holiday season, children distributed 27 hand-made lap blankets to residents. Wal-Mart of Newton donated 30 yards of fleece fabric toward the project and MOMS Club members met several times over the past few months to create these beautifully hand-crafted fleece lap blankets. “This service project was conceived over a year ago when the immediate-past administrative vice president, Michelle Valentine, identified an opportunity to fill a need for some of the elderly residents of Bristol Glen,” said MaryAnn Maikisch, current administrative vice president. Valentine’s Grandmother is a resident of Bristol Glen and both she and her family regularly visit the facility. “The lap blankets were well received by residents, but the smiles on their faces as they interacted with our children told the real story of the success of this service project,” added Maikisch. “We were particularly interested in having our children participate because of the valuable lesson it provided about giving to others.” The MOMS Club of Hampton, Lafayette and Frankford, a local chapter of the International MOMS Club, provides support to stay-at-home mothers in the form of low- and no-cost activities; a forum for topics of interest to mothers; community service projects; and the formation of priceless friendship.
