Newton - The American Legion in Newton has been serving local veterans and the community for 100 years. Post #86, which is located at 20 Yates Avenue in Andover, is open to active military and all veterans in Newton, Andover, Sparta and surrounding towns.
The post is hosting an Open House at 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on March 31, with food and live entertainment. Several veteran service organizations and local veteran friendly/veteran owned businesses will be available to answer questions.
"We decided to have this open house to show our local veterans and community how we support them. There are services we provide that many people in the community are unaware of," Keith Ackerman, the post Sergeant-At-Arms and Open House Committee Chairmen said. “We support both Veterans and non-veterans thru many programs such as flag retirement ceremonies, college scholarship programs, holiday toy drives and even funeral and memorial services."
For example, Honor Guard is available to provide rifle firing salutes, color guard details, flag folding presentations, buglers to play taps and bagpipers. The Honor Guard also provides casket and urn guards for veterans funerals or memorial services. The post has a banquet rooms available to host a special event, wedding, birthday party or a business/community organization meeting.
