American Legion Post 86 celebrates 100 years of community service

Andover Township - The American Legion Lt. Charles A. Meyer Post 86 held an open house and business showcase on Sunday, March 31, as part of its celebration of the American Legion’s 100th year of community service to veterans and their families.
Organized by Keith Ackerman, the post’s Sergeant at Arms, the event brought together veterans’ service organizations, local veteran-owned businesses, and highlighted the fellowship and facilities to be found at Post 86. Ackerman also recently reinstated the post’s Honor Guard; the group is available for ceremonies, memorials, and public events.
“We began partnering with vocalists, bagpipers, and buglers for the Honor Guard,” Ackerman said, “and I wanted to continue to network with other local resources. Like many American Legions, we’ve seen membership numbers drop, so I thought an Open House would be a great way to bring people together.”
With a buffet provided by area favorites; Dominick’s, Bagel Bistro, and Homer’s, and acoustic music by classic rockers Just Us, the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. Attendees chatted with health care providers, assistance organizations, and could sign up for a Sussex County Veteran’s ID card, which offers discounts to the holder at many local establishments. A representative of U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5) was on hand to take questions and hear veterans’ concerns.
Joe Garsetti of the Sparta Avenue Stage spent the afternoon delighting people with card tricks and sleight of hand.
“It’s all about supporting our veterans,” he said, shuffling a deck of classic Bicycles. "Plus, who doesn’t love a little magic?”
