— New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) made a surprise appearance, addressing guests at the Tri-County Scholarship Fund annual Lawyers Dinner on Thursday, May 5. Held at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, the event honors lawyers and legal professionals while raising scholarship dollars for inner-city children from the northern New Jersey counties of Passaic, Morris and Sussex.
Christie paid tribute to the work of the Tri-County Scholarship Fund while acknowledging the contributions of the honorees in the field of law. The honorees were attorneys Jeffrey S. Chiesa, member of the firm Chiesa, Shahinian & Giantomasi PC; Edward B. Deutsch, partner with McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter LLP; attorney Shavar D. Jeffries, partner with the firm of Lowenstein Sandler LLP; the Honorable Esther Salas, United States District Judge for the district of New Jersey; and Gerald B. O’Connor Esq., of O'Connor, Parsons, Lane & Noble L.L.C., who was honored in memoriam. The governor and the honorees spoke eloquently of the manner in which Tri-County Scholarship Fund is changing lives of young people in New Jersey.
Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Tri-County is a non-profit organization that raises money to provide scholarships to financially disadvantaged children in grades K-12 so they can attend high quality, values-based private schools that enable them to graduate high school, go to college and escape the cycle of poverty.
Students at the Lawyers for Tri-County Scholarship Dinner will be attending Rutgers, St. John’s, Cornell, the University of Delaware, Montclair State and Notre Dame in the fall.
Tri-County Scholarship Fund will celebrate its 35th anniversary at the Annual Tri-County Scholarship Fund Awards Dinner on November 7, 2016, at the Hanover Marriot in Parsippany. Supporters and those interested are invited to attend.
