Byram awards educators, service professionals

— The Byram Township Board of Education has acknowledged Patricia Poff, Byram Lakes Elementary School STEM Lab and Enrichment teacher, and Amanda McPeek, Byram Intermediate School sixth grade math teacher, as the district’s recipients of the Governor’s Educator of the Year award, along with Barbara Scholl, Byram Lakes Elementary School nurse and Carrie Gilbert, Byram Intermediate School LDT-C (Learning Disabled Teacher Consultant) as the district’s recipients of the Governor’s Educational Services Professional award.

A panel of parents, teachers and administrators selected the teachers and service professionals.

In making their selection, the panel identified Poff and McPeek for their excellence as educators who inspire and influence their students to learn. The panel identified Scholl and Gilbert as extraordinary leaders in their professions who take pride in their fields to help students.

They are collaborative educators and professionals who have also developed positive relationships with their fellow staff members, students, parents, as well as administrators.

Poff earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Unity College in Maine and Rutgers University with certifications in Biology and Elementary Education and her Masters Degree in Environmental Education from Montclair State University. She has been employed as a teacher for twenty years, three of which have been spent in the Byram Township School District.

McPeek earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Delaware and her Masters Degree in Special Education from John Hopkins University. She has been employed as the sixth grade Math teacher for three years at the Byram Intermediate School.

Scholl earned her Nursing Degree from the College of New Jersey and her School Nurse Certification from Caldwell College. Scholl has been employed as the School Nurse at the Byram Lakes Elementary School for 17 years.

Gilbert earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education from East Stroudsburg University and her Masters Degree in Learning Disabled Teacher Consultant from William Patterson University. She had been employed as a Special Education teacher for 10 years in her previous school district and LDT-C for the past three years at the Byram Township School District.

On May 22, along with other Governor’s recognition recipients from Sussex County, they will attend a convocation ceremony at the Lafayette House where they will be presented a plaque for this prestigious award. The board of education will honor Poff and McPeek, as recipients of GEOY award and Scholl and Gilbert, as recipients of the GESP award, at the May 27 board meeting.

The meeting is open to the public and will start at 7:30 p.m.
