--Eight-year-old Sadie Brand looks forward to Fredon Day every year.
“Fredon Day is the best,” she said, “My favorite part was that we got soaked in the dunk tank. Fredon Day is so cool.”
Her 10-year-old sister, Lola, said, “I love Fredon day because you get to hang out with your friends and be yourself. The activities are really fun too.”
Their brother, Jude, who is a toddler, just delighted in everything. (He wasn't available for comment.)
The day started at 4 pm and shortly thereafter was the judging for Miss Fredon and Little Miss Fredon. Judges must live outside of Fredon. One of them was Wendy Harvey who was judging for the second year in a row.
“It's a fun thing to do and we make sure we look at all of the aspects that go into the competition," she said. "It can be very hard to pick the winner.”
For instance, last year she said all but one entrant into the Little Miss competition submitted a typed essay. “We chose the Little Miss who actually wrote her own and by hand," Harvey said.
This year's Little Miss Fredon winner is Gianna Fracasso and Miss Fredon is Emily Higgins. Higgins will now compete for the 2017 Queen of the Fair at the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show this August.
Rosolino Lombardo, who owns Cesco's Pizza in Fredon, and Dominick's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Newton, was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award for his service to the Fredon community.
The Fredon Recreation Commission said: “Thank you all the members of our commission for putting together Fredon Day! Thank you to Debbie Prommel and Joanne Charner for everything they do for us behind the scenes. Our DPW Department for such a great looking park. Thank you to our Township Committee members and our Mayor Mr. George Greene, for always helping us in anything we need. A special thank you goes out to all of our volunteers that stepped up and helped in everything, such as parking, manning bounce house and more. Congratulations to our Miss Fredon 2017 winner Emily Higgins and congratulations to our Little Miss Gianna Fracaso, and our Citizen of The Year Award goes to Mr. Lombardo. We also thank all of our local organizations for being here with us.”
Fredon Day included a photo booth, lots of games, bounce houses, a corn hole tournament, balloon sculpting, an egg toss, potato sack races, a gaga pit, a dunking booth, lacrosse throwning contest, pie eating contest, and a grand finale of fireworks at 9 pm.
