July 4 on Newton Green

Braving the heat, upwards of 50 people, from toddlers to aging veterans, met on the Newton Green on Thursday morning, July 4, to hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence along with other patriotic works and songs. The event, in its eighth year, is organized by local attorney Steve Kossup and supported by the Sussex County Tea Party. Music was provided by members of the Schiller Institute Chorus, based in New York City, under the direction of Diane Sare.
Kossup said loves the annual recitation because he first became interested in the Declaration of Independence as a young student and came to appreciate the document more as he grew older and studied law.
“Every time I read it now, I find it always has new meaning," he said.
