Mohawk House to host wine dinner to benefit new Sparta VFW Youth Leadership Scholarship

Sparta- The Mohawk House, in partnership with Sussex County Freeholder Joshua Hertzberg, Husic Wines, and preeminent butcher Pat LaFrieda, will be hosting a wine dinner at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2019, to benefit the newly created Youth Leadership Scholarship, offered by the Sparta VFW Post #7248.
“We’re thrilled to create this new scholarship,” Hertzberg said, “which will be awarded to a Sparta High School senior who exemplifies leadership and acts as a role model in our community.”
The Mohawk House has partnered with Husic Wines to hold benefit dinners in the past, but nothing on this scale.
“With LaFrieda meats on board, and Husic offering wines and proceeds from rentals of their Napa Vineyard house, we’re hoping this event will be a premier evening to showcase that good begets good,” Mohawk House owner Steve Scro said, “Giving is contagious.”
“I’m grateful to everyone who is on board with this dinner,” Hertzberg said, “These are big names and big businesses, but this shows that the people behind the names genuinely care. These are people who are doing things for our community.”
The scholarship fund will be co-chaired by Hertzberg and John Finkledie of the Sparta VFW. Ryan Richardson, who will be graduating from Sparta High School next month, has been chosen as the first recipient of the scholarship and will be recognized at the school’s Monogram Dinner prior to commencement. Richardson will also be attending the wine dinner to offer his thanks to the sponsors.
“Ryan spends his time coaching younger kids in sports, including those with special needs,” Hertzberg said, “and he takes a lot of time to work with our elderly population. This kid is just unbelievably giving, talented, and generous with his time and skills. We want his peers to see that leadership and community service is rewarded and does not go unnoticed.”
