SCCC offers pharmacy tech certification
NEWTON - The medical field is full of chances to make a difference in people’s lives. An important role in ensuring patient health is that of the Pharmacy Technician. Sussex County Community College (SCCC) offers a 50-hour Pharmacy Technician Certification Program. Two courses of study are being offered in the Spring 2019 semester, running Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Feb. 5-March 26 (Registration deadline is Jan. 29), or Saturdays from March 9-18 ( Registration deadline is Feb. 28).
Working under the direction of a pharmacist, Pharmacy Technicians fill prescriptions according to doctors’ orders, including retrieving, preparing, and dispensing of the medications in the correct dosage and form. Pharmacy Technicians also help maintain pharmacy inventories, assist customers, complete insurance forms, and more.
Upon successful completion of the program, and certification, a variety of career paths are open to SCCC pharmacy technician graduates, as they can work in a range of settings, including retail pharmacies, hospitals, care facilities, industrial complexes, and more.
SCCC’s certification program course content includes pharmacy-specific medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions, defining drugs, dosage calculation, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, billing, and more. The course, a blend of classroom and clinical hours, will prepare students for the certification exam.
