Sparta Chess team wins two national titles

Sparta. The Sparta High School seniors won the public school championship finishing behind top private schools with some highly ranked players.

The Sparta Chess Team had a fantastic tournament recently at the U.S. Chess/Chess.com K-12 Showdown.

The Sparta High School seniors won the public school championship finishing behind top private schools with some highly ranked players.

Newark Academy was first with a master and an expert on their roster. Stuyvestant from New York City and Belen Jesuit School from Florida were also at the top of the standings. Cole Potter led Sparta with four wins. He was joined by Akshat Iyer.

The Sparta freshmen achieved the same feat, finishing second behind Dalton from New York City. Dalton had a master and two experts on their team.

Ayush Iyer had four wins and was assisted by Griffin Brawer, Ian Bellush, and Chloe Brawer. Another private school team, Gulliver, from Florida, finished third.

Sparta had 17 players participating across many grades.
