— Hudson Maxim School competed with Hopatcong High School’s FIT (Freshman in Transition) group recently held its very own Souper Bowl.

The collection effort was led by first grade teacher Doreen Sciabica, school counselor Lisa Schuffenhauer, and art teacher Britt Huss, of Hudson Maxim School.

Mary Ellen Fata, Julie Wilson, Jason Mulvihill, and Dave Pierson led the collection at Hopatcong High School.

The collection benefited Save the People, a food bank out of Westside Methodist Church.

Students were directed to bring in donations of soup, macaroni and cheese, tuna, peanut butter, canned spaghetti sauce, and cereal, all of which are staples that help carry the food bank through times when donations are lacking.

Students used their food donations to cast a vote for their favorite team, the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots. During lunches on Friday, Jan. 30 Hudson Maxim students, dressed in team colors, joined together to use skip counting skills to total the donations.

At Hudson Maxim, there were 78 votes for the Patriots and 373 votes for the Seahawks, for a total of 451 food items.

Students are Hopatcong High School counted their donation, which included 62 cans for the Patriots and 142 votes for the Seahawks for a total of 204 items.

Hudson Maxim won the Souper Bowl against the high school and the Seahawks were the overwhelming favorites at both schools, but the real winners are the patrons of Save the People with a donation being made of 655 food items.
