SUSSEX — Hunter Space of the Beemerville Fire Department ate one full rack of ribs in two minutes, two seconds (2:02) to win his second consecutive Rock, Ribs and Ridges Volunteer Firefighter Rib Eating Contest on Saturday, May 12 in Sussex. Space, 17, defeated a field of 13 volunteer firefighters from across the state in the annual fundraiser held at Franklin Sussex Auto Mall. Eric Figueroa of the Double S Diner in Wantage donated the ribs and Franklin Sussex Auto Mall, the festival’s presenting sponsor, donated more than $2,000 in cash and prizes to the volunteer fire companies. Space earned $500 for the Beemerville Fire Department and a pair of tickets to next month’s festival. The annual rib eating contest serves as an appetizer to next month’s third annual Rock, Ribs and Ridges music and food festival, June 9 and 10 at The Hidden Valley Club in Vernon. The two day event features headlining concerts by Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers and Artimus Pyle of Lynyrd Skynyrd with attendees enjoying BBQ served up by Figueroa and other local chefs.
