The 'mad science' of children's literature

SPARTA — Third graders at Mohawk Avenue School enjoyed a glimpse into the making of “The Mad Scientists of New Jersey.” The recently debuted title is local author Chris Sorenson’s first foray into children’s books.
Sorenson shared his vision and inspiration for the book and how Sparta played a major role. And although the author and his wife live on Lake Mohawk, he was raised in a rural farm town of Monmouth, Illinois.
“There was not much do in my hometown, so my friends and I made our own fun. We filmed short movies, made dioramas in my basement and went to movies more times than I can count,” Sorenson said.
A power point presentation to the third graders showed pictures of the author in a Big Foot costume and other scientific affects that made the author curious.
“I saw Star Wars four times in a row. I loved the idea of someone who goes out on an adventure,” he said.
Sorenson even showed the students a short movie that he and his brother made years ago, for which he received great applause.
“Big Foot, Star Wars and Dr. Who were my favorites. I like to write stories about strange things, but I have to pay the bills.”
And so Sorenson has made a living being the voice of audio books notably the Margaret Peterson Haddox series. He has also written over 15 plays for the Bate Theatre in Colorado.
His foray into children’s books came naturally to him after an exploration of Lake Mohawk one day.
“Some friends were snorkeling at the bottom of Lake Mohawk on our pontoon boat and they said I wish I knew what was at the bottom,” said Sorenson.
So the wheels started turning and Sorenson began writing "The Mad Scientists of New Jersey “ that has a time travel and devil theme. The book was released this past November and there are two more to follow: “The Defenders of Ong’s Hat “ and “The Wizards of West Orange.”
Laughter and many smiles reflected that the Mohawk Avenue students certainly related to the author’s vision.
“We loved having Mr. Sorenson. He was informative, comical patient and perfect for our third graders. He taught us tricks of writing like character traits, how writers "steal" and that anything can be turned into a fabulous story,” said Stephanie Bernardo, Media Specialist at MAS. “ We look forward to his second book in the series.”
This new journey has been quite enjoyable for Sorenson:
“I have loved it-the interaction with students and teachers. All of these kids are like little experts.”
