Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), Elizabethtown Gas and their contractor, Enviro-Air Technologies, are performing environmental remediation work at the former manufactured gas plant site near Diller Avenue and Brooks Plaza Road in Newton.

The work is expected to be completed in first quarter of this year.

Langan is the environmental consultant overseeing remediation activities on behalf of JCP&L and Elizabethtown Gas.

Work being done this month includes:

• Removing soil and water to a licensed facility for proper disposal.

• Using odor-suppressing foam in the excavation areas as needed.

• Restoring the area after excavation.

Odors similar to those during road paving work will be noticeable at times.

The former plant was owned and operated between 1911 and the late 1940s or early 1950s by a predecessor company of JCP&L. It produced “town gas” or “coal gas” to serve the street lighting system as well as home heating and cooking needs.
