Local Recipes - Stromboli
This holiday recipe for Stromboli is from the kitchen of Maria Denmead, a Byram resident and choir director at St. Michael Church in Netcong. Reflecting her Italian heritage, it is a combination of a recipe from Maria’s aunt and a good friend, which she adapted to make her own. Served as an appetizer before Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use either dairy or frozen bread dough rolled thin. Oil jelly roll pan before putting dough in. Leaving a small space around the edges, layer the following: Grated mozzarella, Slices of ham, Provolone and Pepperoni. Sprinkle with oregano and garlic powder. Beat an egg and brush edges of dough, bringing them together in a roll (egg is used to bond and keep roll from separating). Brush top with remaining egg to make crisp and golden brown. Bake for approximately one hour checking at 45 minutes. When cooled, cut in one-inch strips at a slant.
