Local students participate in guild auditions

    Sparta — Fourteen local piano pupils from the class of Deborah Cafferata, of Sparta, registered as candidates for membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians, sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Teacher Division of the American College of Musicians, of which their teacher is a member. Local entrants are Brooke Alvarez, Caroline Coleman, John Coleman, Robin Chaney, Brianne Farrelly, Julia Lyons, Erin Jankowski, Rhiannon Neuville, Devin O’Sullivan, Elaine Owen, Maggie Sember, Ashley Smetana, Conor Smetana and Nikolaj Veidis. This group of young pianists performed in the National Piano-Playing auditions, held in Sparta on May 18. The American College of Musicians evaluated performances based upon their presentation of baroque, classical, romantic and modern works. Each student performed in the presence of a professional adjudicator chosen by the National Organization. Over 100,000 piano pupils have participated in the annual National Piano-Playing Auditions, which are held in over 800 music centers across the country. Each entrant is given a certificate, a gold, bronze, or silver embossed pin, a report card, and a year’s membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians.
