Augusta - March of Dimes WalkAmerica will come to Sussex County at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 23, at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta. Check in begins at 8 a.m. for the fund-raising event to help the March of Dimes fight prematurity - a growing crisis that now affects half a million babies born in the U.S. every year. Premature birth is the leading killer of newborns and a major cause of disabilities. The number of babies born prematurely each year has increased by 30 percent since 1983. In New Jersey, over 14,000 babies are born prematurely every year. “I’ve been involved in this most worthwhile cause for many years,” said Linda Conrad, of North Jersey Portable Toilets, who chairs the Sussex County WalkAmerica Committee. “The work of the March of Dimes affects every person. With the rate of premature birth climbing, it’s so important that people get out there and walk and raise money. It can happen to any family.” The walk is just over 5 miles. Following the walk, lunch will be provided by Applebee’s. Representatives of radio stations WSUS and WNNJ-AM will also be on site with music and prizes. The money raised in WalkAmerica supports the research and programs to find out how to prevent premature births, and local programs to help affected families.
