Murder suspect arrested

July 7 Edward Mundt, 36, of Elmwood Park, was arrested for the murder of John Mitchell who was found on the side of Lake Wallkill Road, in Vernon, on Friday, June 16. Since the discovery of Mitchell’s body, the Vernon Township Police Department, and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office have conducted a joint investigation with the assistance of the New Jersey State Police, several municipal police department detectives from Bergen County, as well as the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Mundt has been charged with murder, in the first degree, and with hindering his apprehension, a third degree crime. Mundt has been incarcerated in the Bergen County jail in an unrelated burglary charge. He is expected to be brought before a New Jersey Superior Court Judge in Sussex County in the next few days to face the new charges. Bail has been set in the amount of $750,000 on the murder charge and $75,000 on the apprehension count.
